Sprinkler Testing
NFPA 25 requires building owners to have a sample of the installed sprinklers tested by a recognized testing lab. Dyne Fire Protection Labs offers free sample kits and 5-business day turnaround on test results for an easy and convenient way to ensure that your sprinklers are staying in compliance.
What to Test?
NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water Based Systems. 2023 Edition
5.3.1.2: A representative sample of sprinklers for testing in accordance with 5.3.1.1 shall consist of either a minimum of four sprinklers or 1 percent of the number of sprinklers per sample area, whichever is greater.
5.3.1.2.1: Each sprinkler type and manufacturer in the sample area shall be represented in the sample.
5.3.1.2.2: Sprinklers tested shall not include any sprinklers that were replaced at prior testing intervals.
Dyne tests the response time of the sprinklers to ensure the sprinklers will release in a specified amount of time when exposed to a defined temperature and air flow. The acceptable response time is based on a response time index (RTI). Note that a sprinkler coated with a material for corrosion resistance (wax for example) is allowed extra time as defined in UL 199. The response time of coated standard response sprinkler is 180 seconds or the maximum response time (whichever is greater).

Firefighting Foam
Quick, Easy, Accurate and Independent Firefighting Foam Testing.
Firefighting professionals agree that annual testing of your foam inventory is crucial to maintaining the highest possible level of emergency preparedness. With Dyne Fire Protection Lab's annual testing reminder service, you now have an easy, convenient way to ensure that your foam will be ready in case disaster strikes. Dyne tests all types of foam, including AFFF samples.
Dyne Fire Protection Labs is accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) as an independent laboratory in accordance with 46 CFR 159.010 and approval series 162.033 for Foam Type Fire Extinguishing Systems. We offer firefighting foam testing services that meet both USCG and International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements—USCG requires annual testing, while IMO mandates annual testing beginning three years after installation.
To remain in compliance with these testing requirements, a representative sample must be collected. If you're unsure about taking the sample yourself, many experienced foam system service providers can assist with the process. For more information, please contact Dyne.

Antifreeze
According to NFPA 25, antifreeze solution is to be tested at least annually, before the onset of freezing weather. This is to ensure the antifreeze solution is at a concentration that is safe and effective.
Antifreeze is typically placed into wet piping sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 25 5.3.4(2) (a) and 5.3.4(2) (b), "test samples shall be taken at the top of each system and at the bottom of each system as follows:
(a) If the most remote portion of the system is not near the top or the bottom of the system, an additional sample shall be taken at the most remote portion.
(b) If the connection to the water supply piping is not near the top or the bottom of the system, an additional sample shall be taken at the connection to the water supply."
Dyne can help you meet the antifreeze testing requirements as outlined in NFPA 25 Section 5.3.4. When the antifreeze type is not known, Dyne can help verify the type including whether or not it is listed. Note that contamination, extreme dilution, and mixing of antifreeze types can make accurate determination difficult in some cases. Samples that cannot reliably be determined to be one of the accepted antifreeze solutions or samples that do not meet acceptable concentration requirements will need to be replaced with a listed antifreeze solution or an acceptable solution in accordance with 5.3.4.4.

Dry Chemical
Inadequate dry chemical agent can be dangerous, whether that be due to unacceptable chemical composition or moisture content. Several standards require dry chemical agent be analyzed periodically:
- NFPA 10 Portable Fire Extinguishers 2022 Ed. 7.8.3.4.2 requires that dry chemical be thoroughly checked before it can be re-used. This includes checking for proper type and contamination.
- NFPA 17 Dry Chemical Extinguishing Systems requires examination of dry chemical at least twice a year and after any system activation for a non-pressurized system. NFPA 17 also requires examination of dry chemical in pressurized systems to be done at least every six years.
- IMO 1432 31/5/2012 requires dry chemical agent in fixed dry chemical systems be tested for moisture content every two years.
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.161(b)(4) requires sampling of the dry chemical agent in all but stored pressure systems at least annually to ensure it is free of moisture.
Note: It is important to note that if you are out of the U.S. and your samples will be traveling through customs, you need to list all dry chemical samples as fire extinguisher powder on your customs forms. Additionally, please provide an SDS for each product whenever possible.
